Basically, acne is caused by changes in the skin hair follicles and sebaceous glands. It is very common in puberty, between the ages of 12 and 25 but is not limited to this age group.

It is considered an abnormal response by the skin to normal levels of the hormone testosterone in the body. This abnormal response in most people diminishes over time and so the acne decreases in severity as the sufferer gets older but this is not always the case. Usually there is a distinct improvement in acne by the early twenties but some people continue to experience it into their thirties and forties and beyond.

It can manifest itself in several different ways, causing blackheads (comedones), whiteheads, red or yellow headed spots, greasy skin, and scarring.
