The most common form of acne is known
as ‘Acne
Vulgaris’ (meaning
‘common
acne’) and this
occurs when excessive secretions of
oils from the glands combine with
naturally occurring dead skin cells to
block the hair follicles. Oil
secretions build up beneath the blocked
pore, providing a perfect environment
for skin bacteria to multiply. As a
result, the skin becomes inflamed,
producing the visible lesion. The face,
chest, back, shoulders and upper arms
are the most often affected
areas.
After the spots have subsided, scars
may remain.
Aside from scarring, the main effects
of acne are psychological, such as
reduced self esteem and depression.
Acne usually appears during
adolescence, which is a period in life
when people are particularly vulnerable
and socially insecure.
